Three attorneys have joined Spotts Fain as shareholders in the Business Section of the Firm, practicing in the commercial real estate group. David A. Reed, David V. DuVal and Mark H. Miller were partners at Williams Mullen before joining Spotts Fain.

David Reed has focused his commercial real estate practice on the acquisition and sale of commercial and industrial properties in the U.S. and Canada. A particular area of expertise has been the representation of public companies in the solid waste disposal industry, including landfills, transfer stations, hauling facilities and recycling centers. David was formerly Associate General Counsel for Blockbuster, Inc., where he handled all real estate legal responsibilities for the company, including the national roll-out of over 500 stores per year. He was also Senior Real Estate Counsel for AutoNation, Inc. As a former in-house counsel, he has significant commercial leasing experience, including build to suit and "big box" leasing and the development, management and execution of national development plans.
David DuVal’s practice includes all areas of commercial real estate with a focus on the representation of national retailers in the acquisition and leasing of store locations throughout the United States. His work has included preparation and negotiation of ground leases, build to suit, reverse build to suit and sale leaseback transactions. In addition, he has extensive experience in representing regional developers in the acquisition and development of retail “big box” shopping centers and mixed use projects; including handling the closing of the construction and permanent financing for these types of projects as well as formation of the business entities for the developers. He has been named in the Real Estate Law category of Best Lawyers in America and to Chambers USA as a Leading Individual in Real Estate Law for Southern Virginia.
Mark Miller’s business practice encompasses representing small business owners in many matters, including entity formation, contract drafting and negotiation and stock and asset purchases. In his commercial real estate practice he represents landlords and tenants in commercial leasing transactions, purchasers and sellers in the transfer of real estate, and lenders and borrowers in loan transactions. His clients include retail shopping center developers, real estate investors and real estate investment trusts.
David Reed noted that “This was not an easy decision for us. We are leaving a very fine firm and colleagues we have worked with for years. The move will allow us to best serve our clients in a firm that has focused on business and commercial real estate since its inception.”
