The attorneys in our Intellectual Property practice have substantial experience helping clients identify, acquire, protect and enforce intellectual property rights.  These attorneys combine their intellectual property knowledge and experience with strong backgrounds in commercial law and litigation to provide clients practical and cost-effective representation even in the most complex cases.     We often serve as co-counsel or local counsel to attorneys both within and outside Virginia to assist them in providing intellectual property advice and representation to their clients and particularly to help them navigate the local rules and practices in Virginia  federal and state courts.  Among other services, we regularly:

  • Represent clients in state and federal courts, as well as in arbitration and mediation proceedings, in cases involving intellectual property issues, including:

    • patent infringement claims
    • trademark infringement claims
    • copyright infringement claims
    • trade secret misappropriation
    • licensing disputes

  • Serve as local counsel to non-resident attorneys representing clients in intellectual property cases in state and federal courts throughout the Commonwealth and as co-counsel to assist attorneys and their clients with the intellectual property aspects of broader commercial litigation cases.

  • Work with clients to create, implement and manage a strategic intellectual property strategy, which includes helping them to identify their intellectual property assets and, when appropriate, assisting them in registering or otherwise protecting those assets.

  • Assist clients in licensing intellectual property assets to or from others and implementing sound practices to ensure compliance with those licenses.

  • Counsel clients on intellectual property and technology “best practices” to guard against inadvertent acts of infringement or breaches of existing license agreements.
