Spotts Fain is proud to have three lawyers named in the 2006 Virginia SuperLawyers Magazine

Three of Spotts Fain's shareholders were named in the 2006 inaugural issue of Virginia SuperLawyers Magazine.  Meade Spotts was named in the Real Estate category, Hugh M. Fain, III in Civil Litigation and Dana D. McDaniel, Intellectual Property Litigation. 

 


 

   

spotts 06Meade A. Spotts is President of Spotts Fain PC, a Virginia law firm focused on advising, counseling and representing businesses in transactional and litigation matters since 1988.
 
Meade earned his B.A. in History, with distinction, from the Virginia Military Institute in 1979. He earned his J.D. from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary in 1982.   First commissioned in 1979, he is a graduate of the U. S. Army Command and General Staff Course and currently is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve.
 
Meade's practice emphasizes real estate and environmental issues, legislative representation and lobbying, general corporate and business law. He represents his clients' interests before the Virginia General Assembly, local and state boards, planning commissions and agencies. He is a member of the Richmond Bar Association and the Virginia State Bar and is also a member of the Real Estate and Environmental Law Sections of these organizations. He is a member of the Board of Directors of C&F Bank - Richmond and serves as Chairman of the Wildlife Foundation of Virginia. Meade has been named in the business law category as well as the lobbying and regulatory category of the Legal Elite list published annually by Virginia Business magazine.

His off-duty time likewise covers much of the state.  Meade lives on the James River in Richmond with his wife and four children, and spends free time either hunting with friends on his farm in Southwest Virginia or enjoying the Chesapeake Bay with family in Deltaville.  He enjoys hunting, military history, farming and traveling.

 


 

 

 

fainHugh M. Fain, III  is Managing Director of Spotts Fain.  He is admitted to practice in Virginia and Texas.  His practice emphasizes commercial and business litigation including contract disputes, business torts, employment law, intellectual property, and shareholder and partnership disputes.

Hugh earned a B.A. in Economics, with distinction, from the Virginia Military Institute in 1980.  In 1983, he earned a J.D. from the University of Virginia, where he served on the editorial board of the Journal of Natural Resources Law and was a member of the Raven Society. 

He currently serves as President of the Bar Association of the City of Richmond and is also a member of the Board of Directors.   In 2005, Hugh was appointed by the Virginia Supreme Court to serve on the Task Force on the Public and the Courts.  He has been named by his peers in Virginia Business magazine's Legal Elite list in the category of civil litigation each year since 2003, and he is rated AV by Martindale-Hubbell.

Hugh, his wife Renee and their three children live in Richmond.  Hugh has coached his children in youth league sports and enjoys hunting, golf and tennis.  He is a past president of the Innsbrook Rotary Club, VMI Club of Richmond and the VMI Alumni Association and is currently a member of the board of the VMI Foundation. 

 


 

 

mcdanielDana D. McDaniel  joined the firm in March 2004 as a Shareholder in the Litigation Section.  He is a commercial litigator with a particular focus on cases involving intellectual property and technology issues.   He has represented clients in numerous intellectual property cases, including patent, trademark and copyright infringement, and in business disputes involving intellectual property issues, such as trade secret misappropriation, in courts throughout the United States.  He is also experienced in serving as local counsel for attorneys handling intellectual property and other commercial cases in the United States District Court for the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia.

More recently, Dana has begun a Mediation Practice through which he will serve as a mediator in business disputes involving intellectual property and/or technology issues.  He brings to the mediation process in these types of disputes knowledge of the law, an ability to grasp technical facts and issues, and a personal commitment to the parties and counsel to help them explore all possible avenues of resolution.  He is also available to serve as a litigation management neutral in complex commercial cases.  In this capacity, he can work with counsel to implement a cost-effective and accessible mediation or arbitration process to resolve discovery and other day-to-day litigation issues and disputes.  When appropriate, he can facilitate discussions between the parties to narrow the factual and legal issues for summary judgment and trial. 
     
In December 2000, Dana was named in Virginia Business magazine's Legal Elite survey as Virginia's "Top Information Technology/Intellectual Property Lawyer."  Since then, he has consistently been listed among the Legal Elite in this annual survey.  He has spoken widely on technology and intellectual property issues and his article, Patent Litigation on the Rocket Docket After Markman v. Westview Instruments, Inc., appeared in the April 2002 issue of Virginia Lawyer. 

He is a member of the Virginia State Bar, the American and Virginia Bar Associations, the ABA Intellectual Property Law Section, for which he chaired and co-chaired the Young Lawyers Section from 1996 to 1998;  the ABA IPL Section Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee; the VBA Intellectual Property Law Section, Member, Board of Directors, 2006-;  the VBA Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee; the Virginia State Bar Intellectual Property Law Section; the Federal Bar Association and the City of Richmond Bar Association.  He was a founding Director of the Greater Richmond Intellectual Property Law Association and adjunct professor of Antitrust Law at the University of Richmond, T. C. Williams School of Law in 1998 and 1999.  He presently chairs the VSB Computer Study Committee and is a member of the faculty of the VSB Mandatory Professionalism Course. 

Dana is a Member of the Board of Directors of Children, Incorporated, a Richmond based international children's aid organization.

He received his B.S. from Virginia Tech in 1977 and his J.D. (Order of the Coif) from the College of William and Mary in 1985.  He is AV-rated.
