LINC - Legal Information Network for Cancer will present the 2009 Krista Latshaw Pro Bono Service Award to our own Mike Cooper at their Annual Lunch in the Garden on May 14. LINC is a local non-profit organization that provides information, education, counseling and referral services for legal assistance to individuals confronted with the overwhelming issues that arise from the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
Asked about his involvement with LINC, Mike said "I prepare basic wills, estate planning documents, and give general legal advice to low-income individuals who are suffering from cancer. They are typically terminally-ill and unable to cope with the legal and financial issues that accompany such an illness. Almost all have spent every last penny on healthcare and have nothing left. In most cases, I travel to the client's hospital or home, as many essentially live in medical facilities or can't travel at all. Why I got involved? Because it's rewarding to help people who truly need assistance, and I believe that such individuals should be concentrating on getting well rather than worrying about who will look after their children and assets when all is said and done. Even the briefest call to a LINC client who has a simple legal question is greeted with thanks and relief, and it's clear that addressing even these minor legal matters makes a significant, immediate difference to their lives."
Congratulations, Mike!
