John Carroll

Whether he is in the courtroom, the boardroom or the classroom, John Carroll is developing and implementing creative business and legal strategies with a special focus on the fair and effective utilization of intellectual property rights. John uses his extensive experience in intellectual property clearance, prosecution, licensing and litigation, both domestically and around the world, to help individuals and organizations define goals and accomplish them. As a mediator, John has a track record of creative and effective dispute resolution.

John is an engineer and a registered patent attorney. His background and areas of interest include:

  • Patent, trademark and copyright clearance, prosecution, licensing and litigation
  • Trade secret identification, protection, licensing, enforcement and litigation
  • Strategic business transactions, such as mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, commercial and technology transactions
  • Negotiation strategy and conduct
  • Trade regulation, advertising and regulatory compliance (FTC, FDA & EPA)
  • International trade
  • Electronic discovery
  • Corporate ethics and corporate compliance
  • Public and private corporate law
  • Dispute resolution and strategic business consulting services

     

    John has an LL.M. from New York University, and a J.D. with honors from University of Richmond. His engineering degree is from Virginia Tech.

    In addition to prior experience in private law practice, for many years John was also Assistant General Counsel for Hamilton Beach Brands, Inc. In that capacity he directed the strategic development, acquisition, enforcement and utilization of the company's global intellectual property portfolio. John is a member of the faculty at the University of Richmond School of Law, where he directs the Intellectual Property and Transactional Law Clinic and teaches intellectual property law courses as an assistant clinical professor of law.
